Mid-March 06 Newsletter

-From the Match Director-

Greetings!

Our March match was a success, but a COLD and WET one! We had 23 hardy souls on the range, from 8:00am until 6:00pm to shoot the four stages of the TSA Classifier course. Due to the inclement weather and the fact that everyone was already chilled to the BONE, we elected to postpone the night match until our April Match which is on Saturday, April 15th. (See match announcement at the end of this letter.)

A big thanks to our match staff who soldiered on through the weather until everyone had fired through the course. It would be impossible for EVPL to hold matches without each of you!

Neil Smith  Mark Scribner  Kent Radcliff James Gutierrez Troy Moore
Kirk Hammond  Grady Rickman Charlie Kelly

A special thanks to Paula Radcliff for driving to another state to pick up the Head Country BarBQue. To be able to walk out of the cold into a warm place with a great meal is simply beyond words!

Some notes about the TSA Classifier:

This was our first *mass* exposure to the TSA classifier. This is an exceptional test of skill and shooting ability. I encourage everyone to give it a try!   The course of fire was developed with the assistance of Dave Sevigny, who is a Grand Master Class shooter (he shoots for Team Glock).

I find the course to be very challenging and I personally obtain a great deal of enjoyment out of shooting it. It will push the envelope of any shooter, regardless of skill or prior experience. I believe that shooters who desire to improve their abilities can make some serious improvements by shooting this course!

Words to the wise pertaining to shooting TSA matches:

As scoring took place from the March match, a couple of things became apparent rather quickly. TSA has made an attempt to award accuracy and speed equally. I think they have done so in their scoring system. Several things of great importance for each of us, as we shoot each stage, are as follows:

bulletA dropped shot (miss) will add five seconds to your score, for each shot missed. These can REALLY add up!
bulletAs of this date, the penalty for hitting a no shoot is ten (10) seconds, per hit, added to your score.

The lessons to be learned here is this.

bulletShoot only as quickly as you can make accurate hits!
bulletBe certain that a target IS a threat before firing.
bulletA slow or quick hit is always better than a FAST miss.
bulletOne can never shoot fast enough to make up for missing, at least not in TSA!

Upcoming events:

April 1st New Shooter’s Clinic.

The clinic starts at 9:00am and concludes at 1:00pm, at the EVPL range.
